Its color changes from that of the original melt freeze-yellow, tan, or brown depending on the prefreeze melt temperature-to white at room temperature. The layer is very porous (∼98%) and attains a thickness of ∼0.5 mm after 800 hr at 10−7 Torr (∼10−10 atm), and does not thicken much thereafter. The microtexture of the fluffy sulfur layer is skeletal with an organized structure of filamentary components constructed of chains and clumps of submicron polyhedra. S8 ring sulfur is the dominant sublimation phase lost to the vacuum sink, and polymeric sulfur is the dominant residual phase.

The white sulfur is a residual skin that forms on frozen sulfur in vacuum by differential evaporation of molecular species in the solid.

Results from these experiments are presented and discussed within the context of the lunar environment.Ī form of sulfur that is white at room temperature, shows almost no color change on cooling, and is fluffy in texture has been found in experiments on the effects of vacuum sublimation on solid sulfur. Each set was subjected to extended periods in a vacuum environment to evaluate sublimation issues. This study evaluates pure sulfur and two sets of small sulfur concrete samples that have been prepared using JSC-1 lunar stimulant and SiO2 powder as aggregate additions. Here it is assumed that the lunar ore can be mined, refined, and the raw sulfur melded with appropriate lunar regolith to form, for example, bricks. However, the viability of sulfur concrete in a lunar environment, which is characterized by lack of an atmosphere and extreme temperatures, is not well understood.

This would be an attractive alternative to conventional concrete as it does not require water. Discovery of the mineral troilite (FeS) on the moon poses the question of extracting the sulfur for use as a lunar construction material.

Melting sulfur and mixing it with an aggregate to form “concrete” is commercially well established and constitutes a material that is particularly well-suited for use in corrosive environments. Results obtained in this study indicate that sulfur concrete with the additional stuff, cover cement concrete with sulfur-modification, sulfur concrete containing fiber, sulfur concrete with electrolytic residual and sulfur concrete with fly ash, depending on the combination of resistance in most cases, have equal to or higher resistance than conventional sulfur and cement concrete it is also clarified that sulfur concrete with fly ash has higher pressure resistance than the other compositions. It can be used in dam building, construction of sewer pipes, irrigation canals, concrete piles, piers, beach walls and etc, so that a greater proportion of cement produced in the country would be used in construction because generally sulfur concrete cannot be used instead of cement concrete unless in areas with medium and low structural importance or when there is no possibility of using concrete cement. Sulfur concrete has charming features and many properties such as high strength, corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, impermeability, recyclability and rapid hardening that have caused much interest in using it. One of the applications of sulfur in construction and industry is producing sulfur concrete.
